NORTHERN BEACH PIER FISHING FAIR FOR ANGLERS - NOT SO FAIR FOR FISH

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was fair Thursday.

On Kitty Hawk Pier, anglers caught some speckled trout, blues and lots of sea mullet during the afternoon. In addition, a 28-pound king mackerel was taken. Avalon Pier reported a slow day with only a few speckled trout, pigfish and small flounder landed.

Fishing also was slow on Nags Head Pier, with a few blues and bottom fish taken. Jennette's Pier and Outer Banks Pier fishermen caught a handful of flounder, small blues and spot.

On Hatteras Island, anglers on Rodanthe and Avon piers caught small spot and croakers. One 18-pound king and a few blues were landed on Frisco Pier.

Surf fishing was slow along the beach from Corolla to Buxton because of rough seas and a fairly strong running tide.

At Cape Point, fishermen landed mullet, small blues, flounder and a few pompano. South of Cape Point, toward Hatteras Inlet, lots of small bottom fish, small flounder and some nice speckled trout were beached.

Head-boats around Oregon Inlet reported good catches of croakers, gray trout and scattered mullet Thursday. Dolphin fishing was good off Oregon Inlet, but yellowfin tuna fishing was slow.

Five billfish were released by the Oregon Inlet fleet.

Off Hatteras, dolphin were plentiful. Most of the fish were bailers, but a few gaffers were reported. Some of the dolphin landed were within five miles of the beach. Billfish and tuna were scarce.

King mackerel and cobia catches could resume on ocean piers when seas fall, provided the water remains clear.

Water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 77.5 degrees on Thursday. by CNB
