A museum dedicated to shipwrecks that have occurred off the North Carolina coast will be established today.
The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum will feature artifacts recovered from the more than 500 named shipwrecks off the coast, including items recovered from the famous wreck of the Civil War ironclad Monitor that occurred about 16 miles off Hatteras.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded $760,000 to the museum comittee, which has secured state matching funds. The National Park Service has leased the committee seven acres next to the Hatteras Inlet Ferry Terminal for the museum site. by CNB
