WARD TAKES TOP DEEP CREEK HONORS

Senior Latarisha Ward was the most decorated athlete at the recent Deep Creek High School awards ceremony, earning most valuable honors for the girls indoor and outdoor track teams, and most dedicated selection for girls cross country.

Several other athletes were honored for their contributions in two sports. Junior Deon Dyer was named the best offensive player on the Hornets' football team, which advanced to the state finals for the first time in school history. Dyer was also named the most improved outdoor track athlete. He won the state title in the shot put at the Group AAA meet a month ago.

Senior Jason Waters, who will attend the University of Tennessee on a partial scholarship, was named the most valuable athlete on the boys indoor and outdoor track teams.

Senior Beth Allison, an honor graduate of Deep Creek, was named the MVP of the girls tennis and soccer teams.

Connell Williams earned most improved distinction on both the boys indoor track and cross country teams, and Lawrence Claiborne was named the outstanding senior on the boys outdoor track team, as well as the most dedicated athlete for indoor track.

Southeastern District Player of the Year Tamara Sivels was named the best offensive player on the girls basketball team. Teammate Michelle Boyd, an All-District pick who will continue her hoops career at Norfolk State, was named best defensive player.

Other award winners are as follows:

Football - Deodus Harrell (MVP), Vernon Boone (best defensive player), Kenny Manning (best defensive player).

Boys tennis - Neil Applewhite (MVP), Josh Asble (most outstanding).

Girls indoor track - Afreeka Hardison (most outstanding).

Girls outdoor track - Bobbie Jo Hess (most improved).

Wrestling - Ryan Baker (MVP), David Gwaltney (most improved).

Boys basketball - Antonnio Rhodes (most improved).

Gymnastics - Laura Bryan (MVP), Rian Cuthriell (most dedicated), Mariel Brown (most dedicated).

Girls cross country - Monica Harvey (MVP).

Boys cross country - David Elliott (most dedicated).

Baseball - Craig Copeland (best offensive player), Luis Medina (best defensive player).

Softball - Jaynene Allen (MVP), Danielle Jones (most outstanding).

Volleyball - Gloria Brinson (outstanding setter); Stacie Watson (outstanding blocker).

Girls soccer - Amy Hester (most improved).

Boys soccer - Andre Gomez (MVP), Sean Gomez (best defender), Andy Langston (coaches award).

Golf - Chris Huntzinger (MVP), Jeremy Carroll (most improved).
