TWO FOUNDATIONS

``MacArthur awards are much more about gender than genius'' (Another View, June 20) again has raised confusion over the identity of the MacArthur Foundation.

The foundation referred to in the article is based in Chicago. The General Douglas MacArthur Foundation is based in Norfolk. There is no connection between the two. The differences, however, are more than geographic.

The Chicago-based foundation is heavily endowed and gives large sums of money to honor achievement and excellence. The General Douglas MacArthur Foundation has a very modest endowment which is used to perpetuate General MacArthur's ideals - duty, honor, country - and their relevance for future generations of Americans.
