Two regional corporations add responsibilities to their top executive positions, downsizing personnel and pulling a tighter reign on operations.
Barry J. Fitzpatrick, chairman of the board and chief executive officer with First Virginia Banks Inc. in Falls Church, will assume the additional duties of president. He succeeds Paul H. Geithner Jr., who is retiring after more than 26 years with the multibank holding company.
Geithner has held the position of president since 1985.
There are 23 banks in the First Virginia group, including 14 banks with 272 offices in Virginia, five banks with 57 offices in Maryland and four banks with 23 offices in East Tennessee. First Virginia also operates a mortgage subsidiary, First Virginia Mortgage Co., with 14 offices in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern states; and a full service insurance agency, First Virginia Insurance Services, Inc., with three offices in Virginia.
And, John O. Nielson, president and chief operating officer of Smithfield Foods Inc., will assume the additional responsibilities of president and chief operating officer of the company's largest operating unit, Smithfield Packing Co.
Robert W. Manly IV who has been Smithfield Packing's president and chief operating officer for the last year, was named executive vice president of Smithfield Foods Inc.
The company said Manly will work closely with Nielson to improve the strength of the company's leading pork producer operations with dominant market shares in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.
ART
Steven D. Martin was named managing director with the Virginia State Co. in Norfolk. Martin was assistant managing director with the Atlanta Alliance Theatre Co.
The theatrical company also appointed Lori Schick director of marketing and public relations. Schick was development director with the Norfolk Generic Theater.
The VSC's board of trustees also elected Barry Chernack, W. Sheppard Miller III, and Tripp Shannon to its board.
Chernack is a managing partner with Price Waterhouse in Norfolk. Miller is the administrator with Goodman & Co., and Shannon is a commercial sales manager with First Union National Bank of Virginia.
EDUCATION
Claudia Macon was appointed business manager with the Portsmouth campus of Tidewater Community College. Macon held the same position with Vanguard Energy Services in Newport News.
ENGINEERING
Dennis Papa was named manager of the environmental engineering department of Espey, Huston & Associates Inc. in Williamsburg. Papa joined the company in 1990 as a hydrologist.
LAW
Douglas E. Kahle joined Pender & Coward in Virginia Beach as a member of the law firm concentrating in the areas of corporate and tax law. Kahle was a partner with Shuttleworth, Ruloff, Giordano & Kahle in Virginia Beach.
The law firm of Knight, Dudley, Dezern & Clarke in Norfolk appointed Raymond L. Hogge Jr. and Kelly L. Daniels associates.
Hogge was with Williams Kelly & Greer in Norfolk. His area of specialty include labor and employment law and civil litigation.
Daniels is a recent graduate of the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. Her areas of practice include products liability, insurance defense litigation and collections.
ORGANIZATIONS
The Virginia Law Foundation elected Howard W. Martin Jr. president for the 1995-96 year. He has served on the foundation's board of directors since 1990.
Martin is a partner with the Norfolk law firm of Crenshaw, Ware & Martin.
The American Society for Public Administration, Hampton Roads chapter, elected Mary Mayer-Hennelly president. Mayer-Hennelly is assistant library director with the city of Norfolk.
The Suffolk Association of Life Underwriters elected Penny O. Hester president. Hester is the owner of Penny Hester Insurance.
RETAIL
Tim MacCartney was appointed technical services manager with Electronic Systems in Virginia Beach. MacCartney held the same position with The Whitlock Group. MEMO: Career Track reports upper-level executive and management changes. Items
