Martha Oden ``Cindy'' Comer, 88, former Surry County Clerk of Superior Court, of 509 Blessing Drive, Dobson, the widow of C. Glenn Comer, died Saturday, July 1, 1995, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, Elkin, N.C., after a lengthy illness.
Born March 8, 1907, in Hatteras, N.C., she was the daughter of the late S.S. and Martha O'Neal Oden. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and nine brothers and sisters: Brittic Gaskill, Eleanor Burrus, Comfort Austin, Isabel Ballance, Dan Oden, Littie Peele, Sally Midgette, Worth Oden, and John Theodore Oden.
Mrs. Comer was educated at Louisburg College. She served as Surry County Clerk of Superior Court from 1954 until her retirement in 1976, the first woman to hold that position. She was a life member of the National and International Association of Probate Judges, member of the Surry County Democratic Party and never lost an election. She was also a member of Dobson Woman's Club, Hope Valley Board of Directors and Dobson United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Jeffery A. Sweeney and the Rev. Jack Yarbrough at Dobson United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 4, with burial following in Dobson Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Davis and Son Funeral Home in Dobson immediately preceding the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dobson United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 497, Dobson, N.C. 27017.
