BIG BILLFISH ARE SHOWING OFF VA., N.C.

Billfish staged an exceptional early-July showing off Virginia Beach and Nags Head on Saturday, with individual boats catching and releasing up to six white marlin.

In Virginia Beach, the top craft was the Samurai, a private boat that released three white marlin. The Wildfire, sailing from the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, released six whites.

Most of the billfish were released. A rare exception was a 414-pound blue marlin boated by Mike Jones of Chesapeake, fishing on the Outer Limits out of Pirate's Cove Marina, near Nags Head. The crew reported that the fish died before it could be turned loose.

Gayle Edwards of Suffolk earned three citations from the Virginia Fresh Water Fishing Program. She had a 24-inch largemouth bass and 1-pound, 4-ounce yellow perch and shellcracker at Western Branch Reservoir in Suffolk.
