VETERAN POLICE OFFICER DIES

Lt. John O'Connor, a 33-year veteran of the Police Department, died after suffering a massive heart attack Friday night.

He was 55.

O'Connor, who headed the property and evidence unit, was socializing with friends at a local restaurant when he collapsed, said police spokesman Larry Hill.

He died at Sentara Leigh Hospital just after midnight, Hill said.

``He was very well thought of by most of the department, and he will be missed by all,'' Hill said. ``He was a really nice guy.''

O'Connor joined the Police Department in 1962. He served as a master patrolman and a sergeant before being promoted to lieutenant in 1989.

He received 34 commendations during his career, Hill said. by CNB
