Charles Rives Sledge, 78, of the 3000 block of Oakley Hall Road, died July 3, 1995, in his residence.
A native of Petersburg, Va., he was retired as an electronic engineer with NAVSECNORDIV. He was a Baptist; a 50-year member of Blandford Masonic Lodge (NU)3; 50-year member of St. John Royal Arch Chapter, Newport News; Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies; Portsmouth & Suffolk Shrine Clubs; Khedive Temple; Virginia DX Century Club; Amateur Radio Operator W4JVU for 61 years; American Radio Relay League Honor Role; Quarter Century Wireless Association; and U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Thomas Sledge; a daughter, Elizabeth S. Ziomek of Midlothian, Va.; a son, Charles R. Sledge Jr. of Suffolk; four grandchildren, Dana Sledge Cobb, Kimberly Dawn Sledge, C.R. ``Trey'' Sledge III and Frederick A. Ziomek; a great-grandchild, Alissa M. Cobb; and a nephew, J. Gregory Sledge of Newport News.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, by the Rev. M. Webster Maughan. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Portsmouth General Hospital Auxiliary Memorial Fund, 850 Crawford Parkway, Portsmouth, Va. 23704.
