THURMAN WOODARD

Thurman ``Woody'' Woodard, 81, died July 4, 1995.

He was a native of Wilson County, N.C., and a Peninsula resident for 43 years. He was retired from Fort Eustis as supervisor of Military Pay Reserve. Mr. Woodard was the son of the late William and Emma Jones Woodard, the loving father to the late Rose W. Groff. He was half-brother to the late Douglas and Joseph Smith and brother-in-law to the late Grady Smith. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Newport News and the Joy Sunday School Class.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Edith Smith Woodard; five brothers-in-law, Ralph M. Smith of Black Creek, N.C., William P. Smith of Kaohsiung, ROC., James M. Smith of Chinquapin, N.C., Bruce C. Smith of Richmond and Charles E. Smith of Hampton; one sister-in-law, Rose Pereira of Black Creek, N.C.; several cousins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Peninsula Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church, Warwick Blvd., Newport News, by Dr. James White. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 12716 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, Va. 23606 or a charity of your choice.
