Pier fishing along the northern beaches was fairly slow Tuesday.
Kitty Hawk Pier anglers landed a few Spanish mackerel and a 37-pound king mackerel early in the day. Avalon Pier reported a few bluefish and trout taken and a 22-pound jack released.
Fishermen on Nags Head Pier caught king mackerel weighing 40 and 42 pounds, and a few bottom fish. Five jacks were released.
A 20-pound king mackerel was decked on Jennette's Pier, along with some bottom fish and bluefish. A few mullet and small blues were taken on Outer Banks Pier.
On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported spot, and kings weighing 26 and 28 pounds. Avon Pier fisherman caught a few small flounder and bottom fish.
Fishing was good on Frisco Pier, where king mackerel weighing 20, 33, 34 and 36 pounds were landed. A 40-pound cobia was taken and a tarpon released. An 8-pound Spanish mackerel was caught by Hickey Jackson.
Surf fishing from Corolla to Oregon Inlet was slow. Some flounder, small trout and croaker were taken around Oregon Inlet.
Some small bottom fish and several nice pompano were landed along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton. Anglers at Cape Point caught a few puppy drum, some sea mullet on Cape Point's north side and some sea mullet and flounder on the south side.
Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was slow, with only a few Spanish mackerel taken.
Headboats operating a short distance outside of Oregon Inlet reported outstanding catches of sea bass and triggerfish Tuesday. Some good catches of cobia and king mackerel were reported by intermediate charters fishing off Oregon Inlet.
Dolphin fishing was good around ``The Point'' southeast of Oregon Inlet, with several charters catching their limits. A few yellowfin tuna were taken. Several billfish were released, including a blue marlin by the Phideaux, a sailfish by the Sea Breeze and a white marlin by the Right Hook.
Dolphin fishing was fair off Hatteras Island. Tuna fishing was slow with a few small fish landed. Five billfish were released, including a white marlin aboard the Release.
The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 78 degrees Tuesday. by CNB
