A 57-year-old Virginia Beach man was missing and presumed to have drowned Tuesday after he fell from a small sailboat.
Reginald E. Mullen of the 600 block of West Lynn Shores Circle fell off the 18-foot sailboat shortly after 10 a.m. while the craft was on the North Landing River, just south of the Virginia Beach-North Carolina line.
The Coast Guard said it was unclear why Mullen fell from the boat. He was not wearing a life vest at the time.
There was one other person aboard, and that person threw a life vest to Mullen, who briefly remained above the water. But Mullen was not able to get to the vest.
The Coast Guard mounted a search using small boats and helicopters but suspended the effort late in the day.
