MAURY PLAYERS HEAD YOUTHFUL, BALANCED TEAM

THE POWER in Eastern District girls soccer hasn't shifted, but some new faces made the 1995 season a little more interesting, as indicated by a balanced and youthful all-district team.

Maury, which added another title to its trophy case, placed nine players on the first and second teams. Granby, the league's surprise runner-up with its first-ever district tournament championship and Eastern Region tournament berth, followed with six; Booker T. Washington and Norview each placed four, and Lake Taylor had two.

Leading the vote-getters was Maury junior Katie Roman, who was named player of the year.

Roman, also a field hockey standout, was the backbone of the Commodores' squad.

``She does a lot of bringing the ball up the field,'' Maury coach Bob Mayer said. ``She does a lot out there for our team. She's the most important player offensively and defensively and provides leadership on and off the field.''

Roman, who scored eight goals and had four assists, was also an all-region selection along with being named second-team All-Tidewater by the The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star. She also was honorable mention all-state.

Roman is joined on the first team by teammates Amy Mayer, also an all-region pick, an All-Tidewater second-teamer and honorable mention all-state player; Shwante Snead, an All-Tidewater first-team selection; Mary Lee McLaughlin, Janet Blevins and Colleen Maloney.

Mayer, only a sophomore, was the Commodores' top goal scorer with 28; she also had nine assists. Snead helped balance the Commodores' attack with 22 goals and nine assists.

McLaughlin, Blevins and Maloney anchored an unforgiving defense that was unscored upon in district play as Maury swept through the league to a 8-0 record.

Granby, under the direction of coach-of-the-year Joanie Murphy, was a strong second with its only losses coming against the Commodores. The Comets surely will shake things up next season with each of their all-district picks returning to a team that was without a senior this spring.

``We were young, and a lot of the girls that came back this year played travel soccer,'' Murphy said. ``They had some background, and we didn't have to start with the basics.''

Heading the Comets' selections were forward Vaughn Bell, goalkeeper Natalie Weatherburn and midfielder Christina Sarvis.

Bell, Granby's top scorer, had 14 goals and four assists, and Sarvis had seven goals and two assists. In the box, Weatherburn notched 65 saves and posted a 1.4 goals against average, yielding only 25 scores in 17 games.

Also named to the first team were Norview's Kim Fair, Booker T. Washington's Alicia Fields and Lake Taylor's LeLani Tamondong.

Fair, a freshman who was chosen newcomer of the year by the league's coaches, anchored the Pilots' midfield and led her team to a 5-9-1 overall finish. Fields, also a field hockey standout for the Bookers, netted eight goals and assisted on five. Tamondong was a mainstay in the Titans' defense and helped her team to a 3-5 record, good for third in the district race.

Earning second-team honors were Norview's Milissa Reece, Liz Karenek and Lynn Prindle; Booker T. Washington's Kiki Sowell, Leslie Evidente and Andrea Thomas; Granby's Sara McLaughlin, Angela Tumminelli and Melissa Mullino; Lake Taylor's Heather Harkins; and, Maury's Sarah Eppler, Megan Kinnear and Courtney Dozier.

Awarded honorable mention were Maury's Amy Kennedy, Kate Reilly, Julie Bollerup, Leandra Bessell and Ann Magnan; Granby's Joy Martin, Laura Cordo, Denise Fowble, Brandi Wright and Tonya John; Lake Taylor's Louella Cabales, Liz Reidel, Angela Reidel, Stephanie Lynch, Crystal Johnson and Dawn Anderson; along with, Norview's Jennifer Bray, Jennifer Ramos and Megan Reed; and, Booker T. Washington's Lela Byrd, Leah Butler and Angie Copeland. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
