3 SLAIN, 2 WOUNDED IN 3 DAYS IN PORTSMOUTH THE 3 DEATHS RAISE THE CITY'S HOMICIDE TOTAL TO 19 FOR THE YEAR, 3 AHEAD OF LAST YEAR'S PACE.

Three men were shot, one of them fatally, early Wednesday, capping a three-day streak of homicides in Portsmouth.

Two other men were killed in unrelated incidents Monday and Tuesday, police reported.

The three deaths bring the city's homicide total to 19 for the year, said Jimmy Ennis, spokesman for the Portsmouth Police Department. That is three ahead of last year's pace, Ennis said.

On Wednesday, police were called to the 400 block of Roosevelt Blvd. at 1:56 a.m.

When they arrived, police found Carlo L. Downey, 19, of 405 Dwight Drive and two other men wounded. The other men were identified only as a 32-year-old and a 19-year-old.

Downey later died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The other men were hospitalized, and are expected to survive.

The three men were being chased, police said. They drove to the rear of the house on Roosevelt Boulevard.

They tried to get into a rear door, but apparently two of them were shot on the porch. The third was shot inside the house.

Police released no information about a motive or suspect, but said the suspect or suspects may have been driving a light-colored Buick or Oldsmobile.

On Tuesday, shortly after 6 p.m., police were called to the parking lot of a post office branch in the 3500 block of Towne Point Road. There they found a 33-year-old man slumped in the driver's seat of a 1983 black Chevrolet van.

The man, Robert H. Fayton, had been shot in his right side, about 6 inches above the waist, police said.

Fayton was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he died at 4:55 a.m. No other details were available.

On Monday, police were called to 3626 Princeton Place at 10:48 a.m. There they found the body of 65-year-old Christopher Cayonne.

Cayonne's body had been found by a maintenance man at the apartment building where Cayonne lived.

Cayonne had not been seen for a couple days, and others at the apartment building were concerned about his safety, police said.

His body was found on the kitchen floor with an electrical cord wrapped around the upper part of his body. Cayonne also had been struck on the back of his head with a blunt object, police said.

Cayonne was last seen alive at 11 p.m. June 28, police said.
