PICKINGS ARE SLIM AT FISHING PIERS, WITH HELP OF QUIET, CLEAR WATERS

Calm seas and clear water held pier action along the northern beaches to a minimum Wednesday.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught small bluefish on jiggers during the morning, and some spot and croaker later in the day.

A few blues, Spanish mackerel, speckled trout and small bottom fish were landed on Avalon Pier. A 28-pound cobia was taken and a 39-inch cobia released.

Nags Head Pier reported a handful of bluefish and speckled trout taken. The trout hit soft plastic baits close to the beach.

Fishermen on Jennette's Pier caught scattered spot and bluefish. A few mullet, spot and bluefish were landed on Outer Banks Pier, and a cobia was lost.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported several jacks released and some spot and croaker taken. Fishing was slow on Avon Pier with only a few bluefish landed. A 7-pound Spanish mackerel was caught from Frisco Pier and a big cobia was lost.

Surf fishermen along the northern beaches caught some small bottom fish from deeper sloughs on the rising tide Wednesday morning. Mullet, spot, croaker and a few nice puppy drum were landed along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Fishermen at Cape Point beached a few bluefish and Spanish mackerel during the morning, and some bottom fish and pompano later in the day. Small bottom fish, blues and pompano were taken at False Point.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was slow. Head-boats caught some croaker and a few trout on the morning trips, and a few triggerfish during the afternoon.

Blue water fishing off Oregon Inlet was slow. Some dolphin and a few mixed-size tuna were taken. Several white marlin were released, including two by the Surfside and one each by the Hog Wild and the Tar Heel.

Gulf Stream charters fishing off Hatteras Island caught a few dolphin, several tuna and a couple of wahoo.

Croaker, spot and some nice sea mullet should continue to please anglers in the Salvo area, provided weather remains moderate.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 77 degrees Wednesday. by CNB
