A 15-year-old Smithfield boy was killed Monday while riding a three-wheel, all-terrain vehicle on a farm path near his home.
Dean Ray Davis, of the 15000 block of Mount Holly Creek Lane, was with two friends - both on conventional motorcycles - when the ATV he was riding hit a bump and overturned, Sheriff Charles W. Phelps said.
He said the three-wheeler flipped and came down on the boy, crushing his head and chest. Davis was pronounced dead at Riverside Hospital in Newport News.
The three-wheelers were outlawed almost eight years ago, when as many as 900 deaths were blamed on what was then called the ``killer'' vehicle.
Five companies, including Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki, agreed to stop manufacturing them.
Davis, a student at Hampton Christian School, was not wearing a helmet.
There is no law requiring that helmets be worn while riding the vehicles, Phelps said.
