MY KIND OF SHOPPING ON THE FLY AT THE BEACH

LAST WEEKEND I took a walk down Atlantic Avenue in search of one thing, a new and decent store. I hiked down 17th Street first, and there, in the heart of the land of 1,000 tourist traps, I found paradise.

It's called The Fly.

Actually, I knew exactly where to look for this store because some dear reader called my mailbox on Infoline and told me all about it. You know, I really appreciate it when people do that.

Anyway, The Fly is tucked in a little cove across from Jester's on 17th Street, so it's not the kind of store you just discover. The Fly sells street clothes and really nifty girlie stuff. You can also find clothes from hard-to-find labels such as The Antique Boutique and Greed Girl.

And, as if that weren't enough, here are a few more reasons why I love this store: The Fly sells low-rider bikes, but it may or may not have them in. The bikes go quickly at $300. The store has break-dancing competitions, a tag-able bathroom and the cutest little doggie who just chills on the couch.

The Fly is also working with Mike's Cavern, the club next door, and offering all-ages disco parties. The last one sold out. More will be scheduled.

Now, I totally realize that there are people who prefer incense and the Grateful Dead over Greed Girl and little doggies, so I trucked down to The Kind on 21st Street with hopes of balancing out this column.

The Kind sits next to Factory, ``the original alternative since 1988'' and the mother of all other cool stores. As a point of interest, there is no rivalry between the two stores; in truth, they compliment each other.

Another thing about The Kind is the diversity that is apparent the minute you walk in the door. To your immediate left is a nice display of Indian stuff and to your

right, is racks upon racks of Dead stuff. Then there are the girlie dresses (buy those at The Fly for price and selection); the sun, moon and stars collection; and jeans, shirts and jewelry made of hemp. The Kind also has a large selection of candles and silver jewelry.

As for interesting happenings at The Kind, it is showing a multimedia presentation about a petroleum company's proposed development on the coastal plain of a wildlife refuge in Alaska. Earth First, the environmental group that is presenting the show, is trying to think of ways to protest. The presentation will be at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

That's all for this week. If you know of anything that's going on - like if your band is playing an all-ages show or if you wanna tell me where your favorite hangout is - please call and let me know. MEMO: Alicia Luma is a home-schooled high school junior. Her column on things
