In the heat of an escapist movie summer, here is a surprise find - ``Smoke,'' a movie in which actors actually talk. Five damaged souls gather around a tawdry cigar store in Brooklyn. A sense of community is etched via a fine ensemble cast that includes William Hurt, Harvey Keitel, Stockard Channing, Ashley Judd and Forest Whitaker. Directed by Wayne Wang, who also directed ``The Joy Luck Club.'' R

She's from another world and she's seeking a mate. In ``Species,'' Ben Kingsley stars as the scientist who creates a woman named Sil (Natasha Hentsridge) from information broadcast from outer space. He lives to regret it. Guys who date this girl have a real problem: She must reproduce, or else. The monster side of her personality was designed by H. R. Giger, the same guy who created those pesky beings in ``Alien.'' Rated R.

The California Angels baseball team can't seem to win a game, but things start looking up after an 11-year-old's (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) prayers summon up angelic intervention. Catch the outdoor free showing of ``Angels in the Outfield'' at sundown Wednesday at Buckroe Park in Hampton. Christopher Lloyd sprouts wings as the lead angel while Tony Danza plays an over-the-hill pitcher. Danny Glover is the manager. It's rated a harmless PG and it's free. 727-6429.

Folk art fans were horrified: To make way for a new recreation center, the City of Newport News was planning to demolish the art-bedecked home of the Rev. Anderson Johnson.
With the help of federal funds, the folk artist's colorful murals of boats and people and Jesus have been saved. A permanent site for the art will be established near Johnson's old house, which will be razed once the murals are detached.
In celebration of this rescue mission, art by Johnson goes on display today with a public reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at The Newsome House Museum & Cultural Center, 28th Street and Oak Avenue, Newport News.
The exhibit continues through July 31. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Admission is free. Call 247-2360.
