MORRIS KENT TERRY

LCDR Morris Kent Terry, USN, retired, passed away at his home on July 4th.

He was born in McCamey, Tex. and is survived by an aunt, two uncles, and cousins in Texas and Colorado. He is survived locally by his wife of 45 years, Marie Herberg Terry; sons, W. Alex Terry and his wife, Janice, of Tidewater, and Bruce Kent Terry of Raleigh, N.C. He leaves four beloved grandchildren, Marilyn Terry of Virginia Beach, Scott and Brian Waite of Portsmouth, and Joey Batjer of Zebulon, N.C.

During his long and distinguished naval career, Mr. Terry served on several aircraft carriers, including the USS Hornet (CV12), where he was the first man to achieve the rank of Chief Petty Officer on the commissioning crew. He also served as an aviation maintenance officer, and it was during a noteworthy tour of duty at Japan Aircraft Co. in Atsugi, Japan that LCDR Terry developed a helicopter-based system for transporting war-damaged aircraft to Japan for repair. For this he was awarded the Secretary of the Navy Commendation Medal.

He was Episcopalian, a member of Norfolk Elks Lodge (NU)38, Norfolk American Legion Post (NU)327, and a life member of York Rite Masonic Lodge (NU)529 of Philadelphia, Pa.

Mr. Terry's remains have been cremated and will be buried at sea. A memorial service to celebrate his life will he held at Good Samaritan Episcopal Church, 848 Baker Rd., Virginia Beach on Sunday, July 9 at 3 p.m. The Rev. Robert Lundquist will officiate. Following the service, everyone is invited to join the Terry family at home for refreshments and fellowship.
