ROWLAND WILLIAM PHELAN

Rowland William Phelan, 73, formerly of Virginia Beach, died July 6, 1995, in a Pittsburgh hospital following an extended illness.

Mr. Phelan was born in Dayton, Ohio, and moved with his family from Montclair, N.J., to Virginia Beach in 1937. After graduating from The University of Virginia, Phelan served with the Marine Corps in the Pacific theater during WWII, achieving the rank of Captain. Following the war, Phelan began a long career in the banking industry working in Chicago, New York, Atlanta and finally Williamsburg, Va., where he was president of The Old Colony Bank and Trust Co. After a successful career in banking, Mr. Phelan returned to Virginia Beach and opened Career Planning Services in Norfolk, Va. He retired in 1988. Phelan moved to Goshen, Ind., in 1993 following the death of his mother, Joy B. Phelan. He was a member of The Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach.

Mr. Phelan is survived by his devoted wife, Shirley Burt Phelan of Goshen, Ind.; one daughter, Jean B. Wagoner of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; two sons, Hunter C. Phelan II of Virginia Beach, Va., and William H. Phelan of Sea Island, Ga.; one step-daughter, Pam Schulte of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; two stepsons, Anthony Annulies and Wesley Annulies both of Virginia Beach, Va.; and eleven grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Yoder and Culp Funeral Home. Burial will be in Goshen, Ind., today. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Elkhart County Humane Society, 54687 County Rd. 19, Bristol, Ind. 46507.
