BOTTOM-FISHING ACTION CONTINUED TO IMPROVE

Bottom-fishing action continued to improve on ocean piers along the Dare coast Friday.

On Kitty Hawk Pier and Avalon Pier, spot and croaker were taken. Nags Head Pier fishermen caught some blues, keeper speckled trout, spot and croaker during the morning and some small spot and croaker in the afternoon.

Jennette's Pier reported a few spot and speckled trout landed and a jack released. On Outer Banks Pier, good numbers of nice spot were taken during most of the day.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported lots of spot and croakers taken during the morning. Fishermen on Avon Pier also landed good quantities of spot and croaker. Frisco Pier reported fair numbers of good-size Spanish mackerel taken, weighing up to 8.5 pounds. In addition, kings weighing 15, 16, 24 and 36 pounds were decked.

Surf fishermen along the northern beaches caught some small bottom fish and a few keeper flounder. Along the beach south of Rodanthe, a few spot, croaker and mullet were taken.

At Cape Point, some puppy drum were landed Thursday night. During the day Friday, mullet and pompano weighing up to 3 pounds, 11 ounces were taken on the Point's north side. Nice-size gray trout were beached in the Hatteras Inlet area on Wednesday night around high tide.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was slow Friday. Head-boats in the area caught fair numbers of croakers and some trout on morning trips and a few croakers during the afternoon.

Dolphin fishing off Oregon Inlet was fair. Lots of yellowfin tuna were seen around ``the point.'' But most of the fish refused to bite. Charters that fished northeast of the inlet encountered jumbo bluefin tuna. One bluefin weighing over 500 pounds was landed by the Hog Wild. Five billfish were released off Oregon Inlet on Friday.

Off Hatteras Island, dolphin fishing was fair, with some gaffers taken. Quite a few wahoo and a few tuna were landed. One billfish was released by the Hatteras charter fleet.

Water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 74 degrees on Friday. by CNB
