Regarding Robin Davis' letter (June 22) concerning working in a traditionally men's field: For 35 years I also worked in a men's field. My husband and I owned and operated a lawnmower-and saw-sharpening shop. For 35 years I battled macho men, but I made believers out of them.
One man walked out after seeing me sharpening circle saws. A new customer wasn't about to let a ``damned woman'' work on his engine. But I did, and after he took it home he made a special trip back to the shop to tell us his mower ran better than when it was new.
I sharpened circle saws some 4-feet in diameter and chains from chainsaws. I was told by my customers that they had never had their chains cut so smoothly and stay sharp as long as mine did.
So ladies, don't let the macho men put you down.
