RUSH-HOUR MESS

Traffic was snarled in the Indian Lakes section of the city Friday afternoon when an accident occurred at a key intersection. Several people were injured; one injury was serious.

Florine Dixon, 52, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was in serious condition in the Trauma Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after she was thrown from one of the vehicles. Four other people suffered less serious injuries and were treated at Sentara Leigh Hospital.

The accident occurred about 5:10 p.m. at Ferrell Parkway and Pleasant Valley Road.

Police said Leoncio Daniels Jr., 18, of the 2000 block of Blackwell Court, was turning left onto Pleasant Valley from eastbound Ferrell Parkway when his Ford van collided with a Dodge van traveling west on Ferrell.

The windows on Daniels' van shattered, and Dixon - Daniels' grandmother - was thrown from the vehicle. She suffered extensive injuries. Police said everyone else in the two vans was wearing seat belts. A third vehicle was also slightly damaged in the accident.

As a result of the accident, Ferrell Parkway - a busy route carrying traffic from Interstate 64 to several major residential areas - was closed for about 1 1/2 hours while rescue crews tended the injured and the wreck was cleared.

Police said charges of failure to yield are pending in the case.
