TWO RE-ELECTED BY THE SCHOOL BOARD

The School Board unanimously re-elected Arthur D. Smith as chairman and the Rev. Mark Croston as vice chairman at its annual organizational meeting Wednesday.

Smith, an administrator at the Portsmouth campus of Tidewater Community College, has been on the board since 1992. Croston, pastor of East End Baptist Church, has served since 1993.

Smith's Nansemond Borough seat and Croston's Whaleyville Borough seat are up for election next year, along with the Sleepy Hole seat now held by Clarice C. Johnson.

Board members set their own salaries for the coming year at the state-mandated maximum of $2,000. Smith's salary will include an additional $500 - less than half of the extra pay state law allows for the chairman.

The board also re-elected Jo Anne D. Miltier as clerk. Board meetings will be held at 7:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month in City Council Chambers.
