NORFOLK ACADEMY'S MCKNIGHT FINDS LACROSSE TAKING HIM FAR

As a two time high school All-American in lacrosse, Norfolk Academy's Drew McKnight should be able to squeeze in some time between practices to brush up on his Japanese.

After being selected to travel with the U.S.A. Men's Under-19 Lacrosse team, he'll need it.

McKnight was one of 26 players named to the squad that will travel to Tokyo to defend its title at the World Games next summer.

The Bulldogs' attackman, who scored 33 goals and had 69 assists to become Norfolk Academy's career leader with 207, was chosen from among 105 top-rated high school lacrosse players from across the country. Twelve coaches selected players on the basis of a four-day tryout held June 29 to July 2 at McDonogh School in Baltimore.

FIELD HOCKEY: Three local high school players were selected from a pool of 200 participants to compete with the Under-16 Junior Olympic field hockey team Aug. 2-5 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Norfolk Academy's Liz Enright, Tallwood's Clare Reyes and Bayside's Danielle Callender made the final cut last weekend at the National Futures Tournament that fielded 15 teams from 11 regions.

``Just being selected gives them a chance to be looked at for other things,'' U.S. Field Hockey Federation spokeswoman Karen Collins said. ``Many of our players on the national team have come through the Junior Olympic program.''

The selection process begins with 3,000 players competing year-round at various tournaments for spots on the regional and national squads, which culminates with the Junior Olympic tournament . . . Cox field hockey star Kim Miller will play in the Olympic Festival in Denver this month. The rising senior is the state's leading goal scorer with 97. She scored 50 goals to lead the Falcons to their sixth consecutive state title. Teammate Katie McDonald earned one of three alternate spots for the Olympic Festival squad.

MAURY WRESTLING: Ray Baldwin, a former state champion wrestler at Indian River High, has been named wrestling coach at Maury High.

Baldwin, who turned 25 Saturday, comes to Maury from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania, where he was an assistant coach last season.

Baldwin was a two-time NCAA Eastern Region champion at Slippery Rock, wrestling at 177 pounds. He won a state crown at Indian River in 1989, wrestling at 189 pounds.

``Basically I just wanted to come back to this area, which is a real wrestling hotbed,'' he said. ``I'm ecstatic about the job. I'm looking forward to taking (Maury) to new heights.'' MEMO: Staff writer Ed Miller contributed to this report. by CNB
