THOMAS ELLIS WELCH SR.

Thomas Ellis Welch Sr., 82, of the 2800 block of Chesterfield Blvd., died Wednesday, July 5, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.

Mr. Welch was born in Norfolk County and was the son of the late James Issac and Mamie E. Welch. He was a businessman, and as such operated a cleaning and pressing establishment for over fifty years. In addition he was a distributor for Norfolk and The New Norfolk Journal and Guide, Johnson Publishing Company and several other periodical companies for over thirty years. He was a member of the Tidewater Area Business League, Past Exalted Ruler for The Eureka Lodge of Norfolk and a member of First Baptist Church of Norfolk.

Mr. Welch was the recipient of numerous awards for outstanding community service by such organizations as Tidewater Area Business League and Contractors Association; Hunton YMCA; McDonalds of Hampton Roads; and The Eureka Lodge of Norfolk.

He is survived by a devoted wife, Alice Brown Welch; two daughters, Dr. Alice Z. Welch, Elizabeth W. Staton; two sons, Thomas E. Welch Jr., Stephen R. Welch; two grandchildren, Joseph W. Barrett III, Shernita B. Davis; two great-grandchildren, Erik Barrett, Derrick Davis; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be at 12 noon Monday, July 10th, in First Baptist Church, Bute Street, Norfolk. A Christian wake and viewing will be held at Hale Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
