BEACH RESIDENTS OVERCHARGED

A resident of Virginia Beach since the early '70s, I try hard to support City Council. However, I must agree with Kent Ferguson (letter, June 23) regarding parking at the Oceanfront.

I moved from Norfolk to Virginia Beach to be closer to the water and enjoy the beach. I have for years parked along the side streets between Atlantic and Pacific avenues. Last year, when a friend from another state was visiting, the streets were full so we parked in one of the lots. We were charged $6 after 7 p.m. and were told to make sure the car was gone before 2 a.m.

I also went down to see the Boardwalk Art Show and spend money. I again spent $4 to park for the two hours it took to see the exhibits. I spent more than $200 there.

It is bad enough that I pay the outrageous food tax to eat a meal out in the city I live in, but I am also outraged that after paying city auto-tag tax and personal-property tax for my house, car and boat, I still have to pay to park to enjoy and spend money at the ocean strip.
