PARKING RATES TOO HIGH

Regarding the article (news, June 16) regarding the rate hikes on city-garage parking and fines for parking violations: Why would anyone want to do business or be a visitor in this city if the consequence of getting back late to a parked car is a $30 parking fine? I can almost agree with giving a huge fine to illegally parked vehicles in handicapped spots and for blocking fire lanes, but why increase a fine which may be due to circumstances and not defiance of the law?

Many mornings and evenings the Towne Point garage is not operating properly. It has only one gate in operation with dozens of cars waiting up and down Main Street and on Granby Street for their turn to enter. Also, following weekend events, I have called the garage office to report puddles of urine that some pitiful person has left in the stairwell. Is quality of service going to be increased along with the increase of fees?

I am grateful for your article. I join the band of irritated workers who must endure the higher rates to fund a mall project that may never get off the ground.
