R. DUANE RUMBURG

R. Duane Rumburg, prominent musician, 54, of La Plata, Md., died peacefully at his home on June 28, 1995, after a brief illness.

Born Nov. 3, 1940, in Augusta County, Va., he was the son of the late Huston R. Rumburg and is survived by his mother, Elra W. Rumburg of Stuarts Draft, Va. Other survivors include his wife, Jacqueline; a son, Eric, and his wife, Alex, of Sterling, Va.; two daughters, Amy of Waldorf, Md., and Laura Schreyer and her husband, Michael of La Plata, Md.; a sister, Betty Rollins and her husband Dale, of Rochelle, Va.; one nephew, Fred Rollins and his wife, Barbara of Palmyra, Va.; and devoted friends, Mary DiMuro and Richard and Stephanie Forgo.

In addition to his father, Mr. Rumburg was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth N. Rumburg.

Mr. Rumburg received his musical training at James Madison University and West Virginia University, earning a Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education and Masters degrees in both organ and voice performance. In addition, he studied extensively throughout his career with many prominent and well-known musicians including Frances Yeend, Jon Crain and Thomas Heywood of the Metropolitan Opera; Orin Brown of Julliard School of Music; George Hicks of James Madison University; Dr. Ruth McNeil of Mary Baldwin College, and most recently with Marianna Busching and Marjorie Jovanovic of the Peabody Conservatory.

Mr. Rumburg taught in the public schools in Norfolk, Va.; Rockingham County, Va.; and Charles County, Md., for some twenty-plus years. He also held numerous positions as organist and choir director in churches both in Virginia and Maryland, serving most recently in that capacity at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Waldorf, Md. He was a member of and served on the Board of Directors of the Potomac Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Throughout his career, Mr. Rumburg produced, directed, and performed in many operatic productions in both Virginia and Maryland to include the Old Dominion Univeristy Opera Workshop, Norfolk Savoyards Opera Company, Prince George's Civic Opera Company, Prince George's Little Theater and Port Tobacco Players. Other accomplishments include founder of the District V Junior High School Choir Festival, Bridgewater, Va.; founder and director of the Charles County Community Chorus; founder and director of the National Capital Voices of Our Heritage Choir, Washington, D.C.; founder and past president of the Charles County Community Concert Association; founder and past president of the Southern Maryland Choral Teachers Association; and founder and director of the first All-County Senior High School Honors Choir, Charles County, Md.

A memorial service for Mr. Rumburg is planned for August 5, 1995, at Christ Episcopal Church, La Plata, Md., at 2:30 p.m. A reception will follow the service. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made in Mr. Rumburg's name to Hospice of Charles County, Md., or Whitman-Walker Clinic Inc., Washington, D.C., in lieu of flowers.
