Tourists heading to the Corolla area of the Outer Banks would be able to get there on a toll bridge under a bill tentatively approved by the state House.
The bill, approved 93-12 Monday, establishes a state bridge authority with the powers to build and operate the state's first toll bridge in Currituck County. The bill says the toll for the bridge, which would be more than two miles long, could not be over $10.
Corolla, a small fishing village on the northern end of the Outer Banks, was the last town in North Carolina without a road to it. But housing developments over the past 20 years have turned it into a booming vacation and retirement area.
If approved on a final vote today, the bill would go to the Senate, where Senate President Pro Tem Marc Basnight, D-Dare, has tried in previous years to create a similar authority. by CNB
