MAN HELD IN HAMPTON AFTER NORFOLK CARJACKING

A 22-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint of money, jewelry and her car in the parking lot of Military Circle mall Monday after the robber allowed her to remove her year-old son from the car's back seat, police said.

The Norfolk man accused of attacking her was arrested about an hour later in Hampton by state police.

About 12:30 p.m., Toni N. Jones planned to exchange shoes at the mall and was getting out her 1992 Lexus when she was approached by a man with a gun, police spokesman Larry Hill said.

The man demanded the car, money and jewelry, but did not hurt Jones or her son, both of the 1000 block of Kittrell St., Hill said.

State police arrested Elijah O. Morris Jr., 22, at 1:40 p.m. in Hampton after a short vehicle and foot pursuit, said state police spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame.

Van Dame said state police received a 911 reckless driving tip about a Lexus that was traveling west on Interstate 64 near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Police believed the car was the same one stolen at Military Circle mall, she said.

State police spotted the car as it emerged from the tunnel and attempted to stop it. Morris, who was driving the car, attempted to elude police, Van Dame said.

Morris left the interstate at Magruder Boulevard then abandoned the car on Paul Jack Drive, running into a wooded area, Van Dame said. State police captured Morris about 100 yards from the Lexus. He was hiding under a porch.

Morris, of the 1300 block of W. 40th St., was being held in the Hampton City Jail on charges in connection with another crime. Charges were pending in Norfolk in connection with the carjacking, Hill said. They included robbery of a car at gunpoint, two counts of the use of a firearm and the use of a firearm by a convicted felon, he said. ILLUSTRATION: Elijah O. Morris Jr.
