WEST GIRLS BOUNCE BACK TO WIN IN OT

Kellam's Anne Marie Bowdoin and Deep Creek's Tamara Sivels sparked a third-quarter defensive push that allowed the East squad to take the lead, but Kim Hairston hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime and the West went on to win, 83-80, in the 16th annual Virginia High School League girls basketball All-Star Game.

Kempsville's Carrie Johnson was in uniform on the bench for the East but did not play. Johnson had aggravated a nagging back injury, and her future coach at Charleston Southern requested that she not take part in the game to prevent further injury.

The West team led by three, 31-28, at the half and pulled away to start the third quarter by scoring the first seven points.

Sivels inbounded the ball to Hampton's Waynetta Veney under the basket for an easy layup, then rebounded a missed Veney shot and followed with a short jumper to close the gap with six minutes left in the third.

The East drew within five, 46-41, with 1:27 left in the quarter on a trey by Menchville's Danielle Dawson. Mandisa Turner of Charlottesville followed with another 3-pointer and two free throws to tie the game at 46.

Bowdoin grabbed a rebound of a missed shot with four seconds left and was fouled, and the Liberty University signee hit the second of two free throws to put the East ahead.

Bowdoin finished with six points and two rebounds.

``I just wanted to play my best and have fun. Most of the girls I've played AAU with,'' Bowdoin said. ``Everyone played well on both sides of the ball.''

The teams traded the lead throughout the fourth quarter until R.E. Lee's Jennifer Corbin gave the East a 75-72 advantage with a layup and two free throws in the final 24 seconds.

On her team's last possession, Hairston took the ball with seven seconds to go and drove the length of the court, setting up 5 feet behind the 3-point arc and drilling a shot to send the game into overtime.

The East had three of its starting five foul out down the stretch and was held scoreless over the game's final 3:38 as the West held on to the lead.

``I really expected to win and you hate to lose like that . . . after (Hairston) hit that awesome 3-pointer,'' said Sivels, who finished with four points and five rebounds. ``I wanted everybody to see my moves, how I shoot, but I guess they didn't this time. I don't think I played as well as I can at all.''

Hairston finished with 14 points and was named MVP on the West team. Osbourn's Danielle Golay, who has signed with Seton Hall, was MVP for the East with a game-high 30 points and 21 rebounds.
