HARRY R. BOFFMAN SR. M.D.

Harry R. Boffman Sr. M.D., 92, of Edison, died on Sunday, July 9, 1995, at Elizabeth General Medical Center, Elizabeth.

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, he received an honorary certificate from the DuBois Lyceum Academy of Richmond, Virginia, in 1923. In 1927 he graduated from Virginia Union University, Richmond, Virginia, with a B.S. in chemistry and received his M.D. degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1931. He served his internship in St. Louis, Missouri, and practiced in Columbia, Missouri, and Portsmouth, Virginia, before establishing offices in Newark and Linden, New Jersey. Dr. Boffman served as physician for the Linden and Police and Fire Departments and the school system. He was recently honored as the oldest living graduate of Meharry Medical College.

Dr. Boffman was a member of the Union County Medical Society, the New Jersey Medical Society, the American Medical Association and National Medical Association, was also a life member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. The Medical Society of New Jersey honored him with the Golden Merit Award for the practice of medicine for fifty years. Dr. Boffman retired from his Linden office in 1986 after 56 years of practice as a family physician. He was also past President of the Missouri Medical Society and the Old Dominion Medical Society in Norfolk, Va. He belonged to the Firemen's Mutual Benevolent Association in Linden and was a member and former trustee of Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church in Plainfield. Dr. Boffman was also a 32nd degree Mason.

Surviving are his loving wife Helen, one son, Harry R. Boffman Jr. M.D. of San Diego, California, four grandchildren Harry III, Brandis, Dawn and Anthony, and two great grandchildren, Harry IV and Kenneth Philip.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 14, at 11:30 a.m. at Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church, 716 Watchung Ave., Plainfield. Visiting hours Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 at Higgins Home for Funerals, 209 W. 8th St., Plainfield.
