LIGHTNING CLOSES PART OF YMCA FOR PART OF DAY

Lightning struck the Suffolk branch of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads early Tuesday, causing fire and smoke damage that closed the day-care building for part of the day.

Day-care activities were moved next door, to the Y's main building on Godwin Boulevard, until the damage could be cleaned up, said Ed Lee, director of the Suffolk YMCA.

The storm, which hit the area about 5 a.m., also knocked out the electricity in two houses in the Burnetts Mill subdivision, across Godwin Boulevard from the Y, said Jeff Messinger, Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters responded to the Y shortly after 6 a.m. Lightning hit the top of the day-care building, burning a fan in the girls' bathroom and causing smoke damage throughout the building, Messinger said. by CNB
