A Saturday Metro News story said to run fresh water on jellyfish

stings. However, two local doctors say fresh water makes the sting

worse. Dr. David Cash, with Emergency Physicians of Tidewater,

advises using vinegar to neutralize the toxin. An alternative is

rubbing alcohol, said Dr. Sam Selden, a Chesapeake dermatologist.

Selden says if vinegar or alcohol are not available, put sand on the

sting to dry up the tentacles, then wash it off with warm salt

water. Do not rub the sting.
