BOO WILLIAMS TEAM FALLS IN AAU NATIONALS

Reinforcements were on the way, but the Boo Williams entry in the AAU 16-and-under national championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., this week couldn't hold on long enough for them to arrive.

The Boo Williams squad was eliminated by Texas, 63-56, Tuesday morning. It was the team's third loss in as many days. Earlier, the team fell to squads from Washington, D.C., and Indianapolis.

Had the team won Tuesday, it would have been joined today by its two best players, Indian River's Jason Capel and Hampton's Ronald Curry, who were playing at the Nike Camp in Indianapolis, Williams said.

``They had tickets, and they were ready to go,'' Williams said. ``Obviously they would have made a difference. Not only are they our two best players, they are two of the best sophomores in the country.''

Just a handful of rising sophomores are invited to the camp, an annual gathering of the nation's top high school players. Capel, a 6-foot-7 forward, and Curry, a 6-3 guard, were scheduled to play in an all-star game for the camp's underclassmen Tuesday night.

Local players on the 16-and-under team were Brian Bersticker of Kempsville, Javon Artis and Arnie Powell of Deep Creek and Carl Lentz of Cox.

While the 16-and-under team will be heading home, Williams' 17-and-under team is just getting started. Although the team didn't qualify for the national championships in Winston-Salem, N.C., in two weeks, it will be playing in Hampton July 21, in Washington, D.C., July 22 and in a Las Vegas tournament July 23-30, Williams said.
