50-GOAL MAURY MAN PLAYER OF THE YEAR, WILL GO TO WEST POINT

EDITOR WHILE EARNING TOP honors at Maury high school with a 4.2 grade point average with a full AP course load, Maury senior Josh Bradley also managed time to earn top honors on the soccer field.

Bradley, who will play for West Point next fall, was named the Eastern District boys soccer Player of the Year, as voted upon by league coaches.

Bradley netted 23 goals for the Commodores, ending his career with 50. Remarkably, the forward only played the front line for two seasons.

``Man, that kid was awesome,'' Norview coach Dan Dale said. ``He was a great goal scorer. He had great ball handling and shooting skills.''

Bradley, who was named to The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star's All-Tidewater team, moves up from second team as do first team picks Aaron Katrancha also of Maury, Granby's Jeremy Churchill and Norview's P.J. Platt.

Norview's Chuck Barnes is the only repeat selection.

Norview coach Dale says that Platt and Barnes, both seniors, were an inspiration to the Pilots.

``If they weren't ready to play, then nobody was,'' Dale said. ``But luckily that didn't happen very often.

``P.J. was lightning. You could say, `Go out and run through a brick wall,' and he'd go out and do it. Chuck, he was an intimidating guy. He was one of the biggest guys in the district. He was great.''

Granby, which won its third straight district title, placed three on the first team. Junior defender Mark Denny anchored the Comets' back line while Joe Tumminelli and Churchill sparked an explosive front line. Tumminelli, only a sophomore, scored a team-leading 13 goals and was also named to the All-Tidewater team. Churchill scored 10 goals.

Maury, the district runner-up and tournament champion, also placed senior midfielder Seth Taylor and Tiff Hagan, a senior defender/midfielder, on the first team.

Rounding out the selections are Lake Taylor's Kent Rhodes (keeper) and Santiago Ruiz (midfielder), and Booker T. Washington senior defender Lavar Thornton.

Thornton, who was in the exchange program during most of the 1994 season, moved to defense this year.

``He played more defense than he wanted to in order to make up for our lack of experience,'' Bookers' coach George Womick said. ``He was a great leader and kept the other players going. He kept everybody motivated and trying.''

Named to the second team were Lake Taylor's Diego Franca, Jay Jenkins and Joel Jimenez; Granby's Kevin Meyer, Brian Reiley and Philip Shea; Maury's Parker Cansaul, Hank Morton, Michael Glover, Aaron Neatherly and Nathan Mauldin; and, Norview's Adam Smith.

Earning honorable mention were Lake Taylor's David Stunum, Chis Kriz, Alan Hyman, Dan Hall and Austin Calwson; Granby's Matt Jones, Joe McKane, Andrew Markham, Bryan Knight, Nathan Struder and Chirs Boone; Maury's Poston Evans, Flynn Austin, Patrick McMahon, Avery Clark, Patrick Malone, Chris Cobb and Trevor Foster; Norview's Mike Simmons and Eric Leashter; and, Booker T. Washington's Ali Butts, Glenn Wilder, Daniel Collins and James Nimma. MEMO: Sports editor's note: Three players earning first-team honors are not
