Virginia Wesleyan College will present the eighth annual Church Music Summer Conference July 17-21.
The conference is designed to help choir directors, organists, singers, teachers and others through a variety of clinics, workshops and reading sessions. A new event this year will be a workshop for ministers, focusing on collaborative worship planning.
W. Dudley Oakes will present a pre-conference organ recital at 7 p.m. July 16 at Norfolk First Presbyterian Church, Colonial and Redgate avenues. The recital is free and open to the public.
Featured conference instructors will include K. Lee Scott, Michael Kemp, Carol Ann Doran and Taylor Harvey.
Scott, a widely known composer and conductor of choral music, will facilitate workshops on choral techniques and music for worship.
Doran, associate professor of worship and pastoral music at The Divinity School in Rochester, N.Y., will conduct three sessions of music and worship.
Kemp, director of music ministries for Abington Presbyterian Church in Abington, Pa., will lead workshops for two days on ingredients of a successful church music program, from children's choirs to orchestras.
Harvey, organist/choirmaster for Asbury United Methodist Church in Maryland, will lead a workshop for organists.
Fees for the entire conference are $220 per person. Daily workshops cost $60 for a full day and $30 for a half day. A reading session including music is $20.
