Joseph Randolph Carpenter Jr., 52, died Tuesday, July 11, 1995, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Mr. Carpenter was born in Lynn, Mass., and grew up in Hampton. He attended Phoebus Elementary, Wythe Junior High School and graduated from Hampton High School in 1961. After attending Randolph-Macon College, he served two years in the U.S. Navy. Afterward he received his bachelor of arts degree from Old Dominion University. He taught in the Hampton School System, after which he was employed as assistant curator by the Portsmouth Children's Museum.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Randolph Carpenter Sr. in 1994.
Survivors include his mother, Ada Lorene Yates Carpenter; his sister, Suzanne Carpenter Wilkinson of Keezletown, Va.; his brother, Brian Charles Carpenter of Gloucester; and two nephews, Timothy D. and Jesse R. of Gloucester.
A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, July 14, in R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Philip S. Harris with interment in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother in Hampton. Memorials may be made to the Portsmouth Children's Museum, Portsmouth, or the Norfolk Public Library, 301 E.
