DARE PIER FISHING IMPROVES WHEN WINDS CHANGE DIRECTION

Pier fishing improved Wednesday along the Dare Coast as winds turned to the northeast.

On Kitty Hawk Pier, Spanish mackerel, bluefish and quite a few 14- to 15-inch speckled trout were landed during the morning.

A 40-pound cobia, scattered blues and a few flounder were taken during the afternoon.

Anglers on Avalon Pier caught some blues and Spanish mackerel.

Nags Head Pier reported that king mackerel weighing 22 pounds and 25 pounds were decked by Steve Freeman of Kitty Hawk and a 27-pounder was landed by Richard Johnson. All were taken on live bait.

On Jennette's Pier, a few small spot, blues and sand perch were landed. Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught some small flounder.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported spot, croakers, small blues and a 33-pound king taken.

On Avon Pier, lots of tailor blues were taken on jiggers and cut bait during the morning. Late in the day, good numbers of spot were landed.

Action on Frisco Pier was slow with only a few small bottom fish taken.

Surf fishing from Corolla to Buxton was fair, with small bottom fish and scattered tailor blues landed. At Cape Point, some Spanish and puppy drum were beached late Tuesday. Lots of small blues and some Spanish were landed Wednesday.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was fair, with Spanish mackerel, king mackerel and several albacore taken.

Blue water action off Oregon Inlet was slow. A few catches of dolphin were reported, but tuna and billfish were scarce.

Off Hatteras, dolphin fishing was good. Fair numbers of wahoo were taken along with a couple of tuna. Sailfish were released by the Big Eye and Lucky Chip. A white marlin was freed by the Citation.

Trout fishing should be fairly good today in the Duck Island and Off Island area provided winds remain onshore.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 79 degrees Wednesday. by CNB
