KIDS GO FISHING

More than 240 children turned out on five local piers Wednesday for the 23rd annual Youth Fishing Tournament.

The tournament was sponsored by the Nags Head Surf Fishing Club, the North Carolina Sea Hags and the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association.

Dave Masters, tournament director for the Nags Head Surf Fishing Club, summarized the event as ``not a lot of fish, but a lot of fun.''

Children fished from 8 a.m. to noon and then headed to the Outer Banks Mall where awards for the largest fish were presented.

The following children won awards:

Ages 12-and-under category

Bradley Wentz of Pennsylvania for a 7 1/2-inch croaker

Halsey Merritt of Indiana for a 7 1/2-inch croaker

Adam Preiser (residence unavailable) for an 11 1/2-inch kingfish

Jason Phelps of Ohio for an 8 1/2-inch spot

David Zitelli of Georgia for an 8 3/4-inch triggerfish

Ages 13 to 16

Daniel Bedronis of New York for a 13 3/4-inch bluefish

A.J. Martin of North Carolina for an 11 1/2-inch trout

Joseph May of Virginia for an 8-inch croaker and a 7-inch spot by CNB
