The West rolled to a 16-8 rout in Wednesday's sixth annual Virginia High School Coaches' Association all-star softball game, but the South Hampton Roads' contingent played well for the East.
Booker T. Washington pitcher Donna Self relieved Atlee's Jamie Jones, who gave up nine runs on six hits, in the second and quieted the West squad's bats in the third and fourth innings.
Self struck out three and surrendered one hit. And though she didn't return to the mound in the fifth, Self squeezed in a sacrifice bunt and picked up a RBI when Sharon Skipper scored from third.
``I've worked with Donna before,'' said Great Bridge Marni Magyar, who was behind the plate all nine innings. ``I liked catching for her and I was comfortable. They just didn't hit the ball.''
Self and Magyar teamed again in the seventh when Self returned to the mound after her replacement, Amy Morgan, allowed four runs to give the West a 12-6 advantage.
Self gave up a leadoff single to Tracy Doupnik, but got Stephanie Bryant to hit into a double play and Alicia Perkins to fly out to end.
Magyar, who along with Western Branch's Sarah Wolf, started for the East squad but was hitless. She did, however, pick up a RBI and was the only player on either squad to play the whole game.
``I can feel it in my legs now,'' Magyar said.
Wolf, starting at second, scored the East squad's first run on Chrissy Einarson's inside-the-park home run. Einarson, from Broad Run High School, was named the East's most valuable player with two RBIs, a home run and a double. Einarson's home run was the third in the history of the all-star game.
Mount Vernon's Jen Hanley got the first in the West's explosive first inning. The second came in with Elizabeth Urban's three-run shotin the second. Urban, who knocked in five runs on two hits, was the West's most valuable player.
Bayside's Amy Hooks hit a leadoff home run in bottom of the ninth as the East rallied for three runs.
