BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONSHIPS in local golf tournaments would be the start of a perfect summer for Chesapeake's Curtis Deal.
The former high school state champion from Great Bridge is among the contenders for the 39th annual Eastern Amateur title this week.
The four-round tournament opened Thursday and runs through Sunday at Elizabeth Manor.
Last weekend, Deal tuned up by winning the 14th annual Sleepy Hole Amateur.
En route to the crown, Deal posted rounds of 72 and 66 for a 6-under-par 138. He claimed a one-shot edge over Robert Lisey.
Picking up four strokes on Lisey in the closing round Sunday, Deal registered an eagle and four birdies. A lone bogey on No. 6 marred a superb performance.
The eagle came on the par 5 fifth hole where he lifted a 5-iron shot from the right rough 8 feet from the pin and made the putt.
Deal had birdies on the 8th, 10th, 12th, 13th and 15th holes.
``I may not be hitting the ball as well as I did last year, but I seem to be scoring better,'' said the 21-year-old Deal, who attends Virginia Tech on a golf scholarship.
Pro aspirations are on his mind. ``Most certainly I would like to make a living playing golf,'' he said.
Lisey had 68-71 for a 2-shot edge over third-place Troy Ferris. Ferris had 72-69 - 141.
Mike Dunavan finished fourth with 76-68 - 144 and J.P. Leigh was fifth with 72-74 - 146.
Kevin King won the first flight with 75-73 - 148, one shot in front of Tom Lowe (75-74 - 149).
Rick Altman captured the second flight with 76-75 - 151. The third flight went to Lennie Luke with 78-75 - 153. Frank Carmines won the fourth flight with 83-78 - 161. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
