LOCALS SWEEP BASEBALL AWARDS NANSEMOND-SUFFOLK AND GREENBRIER CHRISTIAN TOOK TOP INDIVIDUAL HONORS.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and Greenbrier Christian Academy followed up victories in the Virginia Independent Schools Baseball Association tournament by sweeping all four individual state awards.

Nansemond-Suffolk's Bill Harris was voted coach of the year and N-SA's Mark Fowler was voted player of the year in Division II.

Greenbrier coach Gary Lavelle and player Nick James received the same awards in Division I. Lavelle was honored for the fourth consecutive year.

``I've been lucky,'' Lavelle said. ``It's been fun working with these young guys.''

Nansemond-Suffolk and Greenbrier put three players each on the first teams. All are seniors except James, who is a junior.

Fowler, a senior who plans to play football and baseball at Division III Chowan College, is joined on the Division II team by teammates Walt Bondurant and Derek Riebel. Also on the first team is Norfolk Academy pitcher Ben Hamlet.

Fowler, a pitcher and outfielder, batted .417. He scored 27 runs, had 25 RBIs and stole 31 bases. He was 7-1 on the mound with a 2.47 ERA.

Bondurant, a pitcher and shortstop, batted .344 and was 6-1 with a 2.77 ERA. Riebel, an outfielder, batted .435 with three home runs and 21 RBIs. He scored 32 runs and stole 22 bases.

Greenbrier's three first-team selections are first baseman Brian Turner, pitcher and infielder Eddie Gosman and James, a pitcher and infielder.

James was 10-1 with a 1.55 ERA. He pitched a two-hitter and struck out 14 in the state final, a 4-1 victory over unbeaten Broadwater. James also batted

Turner batted .360 with five home runs and 43 RBIs. Gosman was 7-0 with a 2.60 ERA and batted .320.

Other area players named to the team were Norfolk Christian's Jeremy Elms, Broadwater's Ben Willis and Nick Howard and Isle of Wight's Andrew Gregory and Dwayne Hall. Elms, a senior, batted .583. by CNB
