CHRISTIANS ARE MAJORITY RELIGION

The Editorial Notebook ``We don't always hear right'' (July 5) is very misleading in stating, ``Christianity is not the majority religion in the world.''

It is true that Christians throughout the world, about 1.9 billion, make up less than half of the total population of 5.6 billion people. But your words make it sound as though some other religion were a majority. Not so. Christianity has more adherents than any other religion, with Islam a distant second at 1 billion. All the others are far behind.

In addition, your lumping of Pat Robertson with David Koresh is incompatible to say the least. Whatever you may think of Mr. Robertson, he is not a cult leader involved in the proclamation of spurious and unorthodox notions at variance with mainstream Christianity. It's like saying Thomas Jefferson and Joseph Stalin were both revolutionaries.

Further evidence of The Virginian-Pilot's crusade to denigrate Robertson is noted in the article, ``Koreans broaden Christian education'' (MetroNews, July 4), referring to him as ``Christian businessman Pat Robertson.'' Good grief! Pat Robertson is a television evangelist and founder of several organizations for proclaiming the gospel. Yes, he is involved in several businesses, but calling him a ``businessman'' is akin to referring to Newt Gingrich as a writer. It's not the main thing he does.
