Charles Henry Wilson Jr., 75, of the 100 block of Foxworth Circle, died July 12, 1995, in his residence.
Mr. Wilson was born on Oct. 28, 1919, in Suffolk, Va., to Pearl Everett Wilson and Charles Henry Wilson Sr. Charles received his B.A. from West Virginia State College and completed his graduate work at Howard University.
In 1946, he married Edna Tellesea Butler of Suffolk, and together they blessed the lives of many in Suffolk and Newport News, Wilmington, N.C., and Atlanta, Ga. Charles had an exemplary professional career and held various positions including: Hospital Administrator of Hughes Spalding Medical Center in Atlanta (1950 to 1986); Hospital Administrator of Wilmington Community Hospital in Wilmington, N.C., (1950 to 1952); Administrative Assistant of Whittaker Memorial Hospital in Newport News (1948 to 1950); and Business Manager of Suffolk Community Hospital in Suffolk (1947 to 1948).
In addition to the numerous positions held, Charles served as Chairman of the Board of Mutual Federal Savings and Loan Association (1984 to 1992) and was a member of several other prestigious boards including: the Diabetes Association of Atlanta, Inc.; the Metorpolitan Atlanta Association for the Blind; the Child Service & Family Counseling Center, Inc.; the Civil Service of Atlanta; and the Council on Maternal Health for the State of Georgia. Other professional affiliations included the Georgia Hospital Association, the American Hospital Association, the American College of Health Care Executives (Life Fellow), and the National Association of Health Services Executives. He was one of the few African-Americans to receive the American College of Hospital Administrators Fellowship. Charles enjoyed many active years as a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the Guardsmen, and other social and community-based organizations. He was also formerly a member of Friendship Baptist Church of Atlanta, and was a member of First Baptist Church, Mahan St., Suffolk.
Charles leaves his wife, Edna Butler Wilson to honor his memory; two sisters, Dolly Wilson Richards and Pearl Wilson Flowers; a brother, George Thomas Wilson; two brothers-in-law, George Lee Richards Sr. and Delbert Leon Flowers; a sister-in-law, Joyce Berry Wilson; and a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday by the Rev. Isaac E. Williams in First Baptist Church, Mahan St., Suffolk. Place of burial is Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk. The body will be placed in church at noon. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, or Suffolk Rescue Squad.
