Halsey Ward Salter, 76, of the 4000 block of N. Witchduck Road, a native of Sea Level, N.C., died Thursday, July 13, 1995, in his home. He tried to challenge his illness of cancer for two years with much pain along the way. He has gone to his lighthouse in the sky.
Halsey was a retired owner and president of Salter Brokerage, Salter Marine and Tugboat, Inc., half owner and president of Salter and Haldeman Towing Line, Inc., and retired after 31 years of service as vice president of maintenance from C.G. Willis Barge Line.
Halsey was born in 1918 in Beaufort, N.C., and has made his home in Virginia since he was 17 years old. He was chief machinist at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard during World War II. He was a senior member of Atlantic Shores Baptist Church, a 37 year member of the Norfolk Host Lions Club where he was most recently conferred with a Melvin Jones Fellowship, The Lion Club's highest commendation for humanitarian service. He was a 50 year member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 109 of Beaufort, N.C., Scottish Rite Bodies, Sudan Shrine Temple of New Bern, N.C., and the Khedive Yacht Club. He was a member of the Propeller Club Port of Norfolk, a life time member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and a member of the Aragona Moose Lodge. He also was the founder of the Sea Level Community Fund and an avid collector of nautical antiques.
Survivors include his beloved wife and best friend, Angie M. Salter; a daughter, Marilyn Kay Mishoe and her husband, Jim of Norfolk; two sons, Halsey Wayne ``Tommy'' Salter and his wife, Julie of Montclair, Calif. and Russell Dale Salter and his wife, Nancy of Chesapeake; a stepdaughter, Georgina King and her husband, Pat of Charlottesville, Va.; two stepsons, Michael Taylor of Virginia Beach and Bobby Taylor and his wife, Joanie of Baltimore, Md.; a stepdaughter-in-law, Carol Taylor of Norfolk; two sisters, Geneva Lupton and Gertie Taylor of Sea Level, N.C.; nine grandchilden; 15 stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and loving friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sophronia Rose and Bertie Salter.
A chapel funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 16, 1995, in the Cox Funeral Home by Dr. George Sweet. The family will be at the funeral home on Saturday night from 6:30 until 8 p.m. for visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Following the service in Norfolk, Mr. Salter will be taken to Bell-Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, N.C. for a church service on Tuesday in Sea Level Missionary Baptist Church by his nephew, the Rev.
