Numerous big fish appeared in pier catches along the northern beaches Friday.
Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught eight cobia, with the largest weighing more than 50 pounds.
Some small bluefish and small flounder were taken on Avalon Pier. Cobia weighing 20 and 33 pounds were landed, and a smaller cobia was released.
Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught a few speckled trout during the morning.
Jennette's Pier reported a 16-pound drum taken Thursday evening, but little action during the day Friday.
Some yearling drum were taken late Thursday night on Outer Banks Pier. An 18-pound king mackerel was landed and a 25-pound jack was released Friday.
Pier fishing on Hatteras Island was slow overall.
Rodanthe Pier fishermen caught a few spot and croaker, and a nice Spanish mackerel was taken on live bait.
Avon Pier reported a handful of spot and croaker landed. Anglers on Frisco Pier also caught a few spot and croaker.
Spot, croaker, small bluefish and a few trout were taken in the surf along the northern beaches.
Anglers fishing the north side of Oregon Inlet near the bridge caught a few flounder, nice-sized spot and baby bluefish.
Some small bottom fish and bluefish were caught along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton. Some Spanish mackerel and puppy drum were taken late Thursday at Cape Point.
Spanish mackerel were caught during the morning Friday, and flounder were caught along the jetties during the day.
Some nice mullet, spot and blues were beached in the Frisco area.
Charters trolling along Oregon Inlet caught Spanish and king mackerel Friday.
Quite a few cobia also were taken. Headboats in the area reported good catches of croaker and gray trout.
Dolphin fishing was good off Oregon Inlet. Some scattered wahoo and tuna were taken, and several billfish were released.
Dolphin fishing improved off Hatteras Island, with some fair catches reported. Tuna were scarce, but some wahoo were taken and a few marlin were released.
Pier anglers should continue to catch scattered cobia and king mackerel as long as the water remains clear, but other pier action will remain slow.
