PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEDICAL CENTER CHANGES COMMAND

ILLUSTRATION: Rear Adm. William J. McDaniel, left, relinquished command of

Portsmouth Naval Medical Center during a ceremony at the hospital on

Friday. As Rear Adm. William R. Rowley became the 63rd commander of

Portsmouth Naval, McDaniel ended a colorful, three-year tenure

there, where he was known for his love of kayaking and his

adventurous spirit. During the outdoor ceremony, McDaniel remarked

that he'd rather be kayaking than enduring the afternoon heat. He

now heads to Hawaii, where he will serve for 18 months before

retiring from the Navy.
