An elderly man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on Pruden Boulevard early Friday morning, police said.
Thomas Claiborne, 74, of the 400 block of Cullodan St. was walking in the 2500 block of Pruden Boulevard near the U.S. Route 58 Bypass when he was hit, said police spokesman Mike Simpkins.
Sergeant J.C. Patterson was patrolling in the area when he spotted a leather shoe in the road about 5:45 a.m. Upon investigating, he found Claiborne's body in the grass near the roadway.
Police believe Claiborne had been hit earlier that morning but do not know why he was walking in the area, which is more than 3 miles from his home. They are seeking information that may help locate a suspect vehicle and the person responsible.
Anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk Police at 925-6350 or Suffolk Crime Line at 539-1222.
